Residents of Norway, Mike and Kari Fuller-Gee are award winning landscape architects and urban designers. They have both worked-in and visited South Africa since the mid-1970s and have always wanted to realize their dream of creating a 'Perfect Getaway' surrounded by Cape vineyards and spectacular mountain vistas, far from the stresses of city living.
They have carefully designed the renovations of the existing homestead, new houses and apartments in close collaboration with local architects and planners, with the ultimate goal to achieve a 'cross-over' design style that combines the best of Scandinavia with Africa.

Past

Shiraz Estate can trace its heritage back to 1881 when the Laubscher family originally farmed tobacco on the Vlakfontein estate. This homestead provided for spacious rooms, high ceilings, and everything else that was regarded as essential for comfortable living in days past. Time passed and a Shiraz vineyard was planted and some of the best wines in the country were produced.

The farmstead may have changed, but the Shiraz vineyards still grace fields alongside the Estate, and exceptional quality wines are still produced at nearby cellars. Click here for a brief history of Riebeek Kasteel

Present

The farm was sold in 2005 with the current owners lovingly restoring the manor house to its former glory, with great care to preserve the massive Oregon pine beams in the ceiling, original windows and doors and the classic roof. Enjoy the charm of yesteryear in your renovated bedroom and the luxury of a modern en-suite bathroom, or relax in the cozy swimming pool and garden area.

We invite you to come and experience the quiet, peaceful, environment of 1881 Guest House at Shiraz Estate, Riebeek Kasteel. Apart from the old-world charm, we will pamper you with a scrumptious continental breakfast and invite you to make use of the tranquil swimming pool. Shiraz Estate is the perfect base from which to explore the pleasures of the Riebeek and Tulbagh valleys, reknown for their breathtaking scenery and beautiful wine and olive farms.

Future

The Shiraz Estate is currently being developed as a private Guest House, Self Catering and Venue destination. Extra accommodation is being built adjacent to the renovated guest house and will be accessed via a common Gatehouse. Three houses are already completed with a further eight (one-, two- or three- bedroom) houses and semi-detached units being built. The final phase will include the renovation of the barns into venues for hire.

Once completed the Estate will consist of 26 bedrooms and will be able to accommodate 52 guests, making Shiraz Estate an attractive new venue for weddings, conferences, art and creativity courses.
